Early 1943, Ron Roberts entered a new phase of his RAF service as part of the " RAF Servicing Commandos" which basically trained to capture enemy airfields ahead of the planned invasions of Sicily and mainland Italy. Initial training was undertaken at Hadera in Palestine and later at RAF Kabrit at the foot of the Great Bitter Lake sharing advanced training with the specialist Commandos of the Long Range Desert Group whose main base was also at RAF Kabrit.

Above, note Kabrit LRDG Base-RAF Base with airfield alongside the Suez Canal, also the training home for the 8th Army Long Range Desert Group ( fore runners of the SAS. They also started out using American Chevrolet vehicles !!!.....Alwyn )
Above, a 1942 Parade muster in front of a 30 cwt Chevrolet truck with the C.O. sitting third from right. Ron Roberts is 5th from the left, middle row. Anyone recognise any other faces ???
Titled " Bomber Suez Canal Zone " Could this have formed part of the commando training ? Looks like one of their Chevrolet vehicles under canvas.
